I've written "craft" rather than "scanner", because it is, in fact, a photographic camera especially - and cleverly - designed for the reproduction of negatives, slides and photos on paper (why not a word like "scanner", for example?). With a good memory card, it is a machine entirely alone : I have, sitting on my chair, scanning a bunch of negatives, photographs, "paper" and the few slides of my wife at a very high speed. The results, displayed on the large screen of my computer, are in each case excellent. Only downside : the support for the negative is secured to a closure a bit hard. What a disappointment! Used in advanced mode with the software accompanying SilverFast SE Plus 8, I do not get, in the best cases, and after touch-up laborious, as images that are dull and without depth. This is grosso modo to the display quality photograph printed on newsprint! Any attempt to improve things even more by playing even more on the contrast, the saturation, and the color does not cause distortions unattractive. With the slide more difficult, for example, scenes shot on overcast days, the scanner locks of authority on the lightest parts, or the overcast sky, captures poorly the average and massacre literally the dark parts. Many of the details disappear. The tools, levels and curves are helpless and do produce distortions of color and contrast really horrible. A grain much higher than that there are actually on the photo in question appears (?). The multi-exposure improves, alas, very few things... (And yet, I have considered the outputs in TIFF format, so no loss!) After a balancing fairly simple brightness, contrast and colors with the help of the tool "curves" of the free software GIMP, I get it quickly and without difficulty images infinitely better : well-lit, well detailed with a good depth and natural colors... also, the driver of the scanner and the SilverFast software installs without problems on Windows 7. The documentation is nice, written in good English, but far too superficial! Of aids are included in the advanced features of SilverFast, but the video in English, not subtitled. (They are, therefore, unusable for all those who are not able to follow a conversation in English.) In addition, the glossary so called, in French, with a beautiful French flag on its cover page, is in reality... in English, fortunately quite simple to read! It should also be noted that the tool "curves" of SilverFast is very difficult to use because of its nine-point imposed from the outset. Worst : the two extreme points can only be moved vertically and not horizontally! IN SUMMARY. The dynamics of this scanner is too bad and the documentation is too superficial. At the beginning one wonders a little how to make scans (front, back etc..) and then after a few tests one takes his mark.
